Welcome to Willow Class.
We are Year 5 and this term we are immersing ourselves into the world of Hogwarts, spiders, spells, wizards, wands, friendships, foes, giants, Muggles and snakes. Yes…our topic is ‘Harry Potter’. We will be focussing on characterisation, setting, action, suspense, prequels, sequels and changing time in English as we look at, and magpie, the tools used by J.K.Rowling to paint the world and goings-on of a special young man called Harry! Severus Snape will be aiding our Science lessons as we investigate materials and their properties. We will be learning to describe people, places and objects in French in order to talk to Fleur Delacour when she visits from Beauxbatons for the Triwizard Championships! Map reading skills will be developed as we use the 8 points of a compass and 4 or 6 figure grid references to locate countries, cities and places and plan routes should the Weasley twins try to fox us with their Marauder’s map. Scratch will be used to develop our coding skills and we will keep ourselves fit and healthy (should we need to battle with Voldemort) through our swimming lessons and Yoga based dance sessions. We mustn’t forget the paintings and pictures that adorn the walls of Hogwarts – we will be adding to the walls by creating our own landscapes Van Gogh style!
Our PSHCE theme this half term is ‘Connect’. We will be playing team based games to make positive connections with one another in our classroom and look at making connections with our class community and global community. We will be visiting ‘Leading Lives’ at the Sudbury Community Hub (and they will visit us) to join in a variety of fun activities. We aim to promote positive connections and allow the children to develop an understanding and sensitivity towards difference. We have already connected with one another by voting for our school councillors this year. Noah and Mia will do a grand job and we are proud to have them represent Willow Class. They will be the voices for our ideas and opinions on a whole school level. Our ‘Chatter Matters’ box in our classroom allows us to voice our worries, concerns and ideas on a class level.
In Year 5 we also have music lessons provided by Suffolk County Council. This year we are learning to play the violin.
So…we have a lot to learn and many exciting events on the way- including a trip to the Harry Potter studios!!! We have already enjoyed a fantastic couple of days together at the beginning of term and we look forward to many more.
